Many adults eat little protein at breakfast, a moderate amount at lunch, and most of the day’s total at dinner. Aging muscle may respond better when useful protein portions appear at more than one meal.

Snacks can help when appetite is limited: yogurt, milk or fortified soy beverage, hummus, edamame, or nut butter paired with another food. Whole foods bring vitamins, minerals, fats, and fiber that isolated protein does not.
Pair Protein With Training
Protein distribution is most useful alongside progressive resistance exercise. Muscles need a reason to adapt. Two or more weekly strength sessions, scaled to ability and recovery, can target major muscle groups.
A meal after training is convenient, but the entire day’s pattern matters more than a narrow minute-by-minute window. Consistency beats perfect timing.
Watch for Hidden Tradeoffs
Adding protein should not crowd out vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, or adequate hydration. Processed meats and heavily sweetened products are not nutritionally equivalent to fish, beans, eggs, dairy, tofu, nuts, or minimally processed poultry.
Seek advice for unintentional weight loss, persistent poor appetite, difficulty chewing or swallowing, or known kidney disease. A personalized plan can protect both muscle and overall nutrition.
